Advocating Basics
1. Know the Legislature
A basic knowledge of the Iowa legislative process is essential. It saves time and it will make your advocating efforts more effective. There's a good explanation in the publication, "How a Bill Becomes a Law," available from the Legislative Information Office. 2. Focus On One Important Issue
Hundreds of legislative proposals, or bills, are introduced in the legislature each year. Since your time is limited, you'll be far more effective when you learn the details of one narrow issue. Then, be sure to stay up to date with its legislative progress so your efforts will be timely.
3. Research Your Issue
It's not enough to have a strong view on an issue – you need to support your opinion with accurate, current details from respected sources. To help, you can use the staff and resources at the Law Library, the Legislative Service Bureau Library (Legislative Library) and the Legislative Information Office (http://www.legis.state.ia.us/Central/LIO.htm) in the State Capitol.
4. Know Your Legislators
The more you know about legislators, the better your chance of swaying them with your message. The publications, "Maps & Members -- A Guide To Iowa's Legislative Districts" and "The Official Directory of the Iowa Legislature" provide the details you need.
